<br>Jim Raynor was born a farm boy on the Fringe World of Shiloh. In his youth, he was taught outdoor skills such as hunting and shooting by his grandfather, skills which would later prove useful as a marshal. The first eighteen years of his life were spent entirely on his homeworld, working on the farm.
<br>
<br>Raynor was good at both schoolwork and working farm equipment, and learned how to drive multiple vehicles such as the vulture and became an expert demolition player for the Centerville team. His father taught him how to brawl, and to stand up to bullies. Raynor would later say that his father taught him where to draw the line, rather than to take a stand.
<br>

James left home and joined the Confederacy Marine Corps to become apart of the Guild Wars; a rivalry between Terran factions, at the request of his friends at the time. Young and brash Jim joined and made his way up the chain of command through combat and valor. He was a successful soldier, but his career would blow up in his face when his Master Sergeant commented that Suicide Marines were "useless," James would punch the Sergeant in the face and later be demoted for assaulting a superior officer.

Later James would discover his Platoon's General was planning to betray them and through a series of events, Jim and his squad would turn the tide and play a key part in exposing him and Jim Raynor personally executed Vanderspool after Vanderspool had been crippled. This moment and event caused James Raynor and Tychus Findley to become outlaws doing whatever it took to get by. As a duo team abandoning the military they would be considered outlaws and deserters. It wasn't until an old Military contact named Myles Hammond had offered Jim a position as Marshal on Mars Sara that James was able to settle down and begin to rethink his life. At 29 (2496) he found himself with a wife, a son, and career while the wind was at his back. Myles had erased James Military record and gave him a clean slate to work with.

Jim took up life on Mars Sara sometime after his military career, it was here that James had quickly fallen in love with a woman name Lidya "Liddy." They would marry and have a son named John Raynor. James reestablished a clean record thanks to friends in high places and became Marshal of the Mars Sara colony. 5 years into his career as a Marshal, the Confederacy would label the boy "Psychic" and press to take him to an institute for training. James Raynor didn't trust the Confideracy's offer, but his wife Liddy told him that John would be alright.
<br>
A month later they would have word from the Tarsonis Institute that their son had died in a shuttle accident. James and Lidya were struck with emotional trauma and remorse, Lidya felt guilty for persuading James and eventually died of grief over the tragedy. James continued on his life working as a Marshal for the Mars Sara Colony until the war with the Zerg occurred and James offered his support for helping a new Human faction: The Sons of Korhal under the command of Arcturus Mengsk.

Arcturus Mengsk would play an instrumental role in Raynor's life. While Arcturus tried to establish new order against the Confederacy, Mengsk would try to win over popularity by defeating the Zerg. Through working with Arcturus, James would meet a woman who he had fallen in love with despite only working with her for a short period of time, Sarah Kerrigan. A special operations soldier and "Ghost" unit.

His love for Sarah Kerrigan would haunt and follow him upon Arcturus Mengsk's command to leave her behind on Tarsonis to die in the midst of an approaching Zerg swarm. James arrived hours late in an attempt to find and recover the body, but upon finding nothing James Raynor declared himself an enemy of Arcturus Mengsk and vowed vengeance for his betrayal of Sarah Kerrigan.
