Mr. Freeze
Story: In the year 1940, an unknown specimen of creature was found frozen in Northern Russia by a team of Russian scientists and was held under top secret care of the Soviet Government until its collapse in 1989. The specimen had vanished and was never found until 2008 by the Japanese Government during a police raid on terror suspects. Japanese scientists employ the aid of Gotham’s renowned scientist in cryogenics, Doctor Victor Fries in a new discovery. Victor Fries discovers how to revive the creature and the unexpected happens.
Chapter One: Icy Touch
Frigid air of January creates an atmosphere of unworkable conditions, it is freezing cold and he doesn't want to be here. A built in face mask collapsed around the once exposed chin and lips of the Dark Knight now concealed behind coat of darkness. His cape wrapped around his figure as a warm patch created heat within his suit and gradually created warmth underneath the cloak. He opposed this plan, but due to his position he was forced to tolerate and accept it as something he couldn't disobey.
A door to the alley beneath opened, Snipers were surrounding the buildings and to no surprise they failed to spot the vigilante within the darkness. They didn't want his help, they had made it very clear even against the Commissioner and Mayor's recommendations. He remembers it all too clearly, standing before the State Department, Mayor, and Commissioner..."...We don't need the help of a wanted criminal for this, its a very simple transfer." Commissioner Gordon held both hands on his hips, his sleeves rolled up to his elbows and his coat jacket settled on the back of a chair.
"I don't like this setup. He's a locked up scientist and you want to give him a chance for some of his old partners a chance to spring him free. You'll have to do better than to let me buy into your word, Mr. Hendricks."
"You have the United States Federal Government's word that nothing will happen, what more do you need, Commissioner? We understand the risk this man is--..."
"With all due respect, no you don't. Victor Fries is brilliant and more cunning than most of Washington. Given the choice over the state and our masked vigilante who's has a record of helping to solve cases that locked away most of those lunatics in Arkham Asylum, I'll take my chances with him."
Hendricks would roll his eyes and sigh whilst shaking his head.
Mayor Callahan spoke up "Mr. Hendricks, let me propose we'll give up Mr. Freeze or shall I say -- Victor Fries with no hassle so long as you allow the Batman to oversee its progress. There's no reason for us to have a fight with each other over this dispute."
"No, we believe that the Batman's involvement is a sign of endorsement." Mr. Hendricks explained tapping his fingers across the black portfolio in his hands, his black framed glasses reflecting cool eyes with anticipated thoughts.
"That's--..." were the futile words of James Gordon before he was interrupted by Mr. Hendricks again. "Our clients do not want the Batman to be involved at all with this project out of fear that Dr. Victor Fries will be less incline to help if Batman were involved. Mr. Mayor, this isn't a negotiating session anymore. I have Orders by the Governor to transfer Arkham Asylum patient Victor Fries, otherwise known as Mr. Freeze, to the United States State Department for processing and transfer."
The Dark Knight would glare at Hendricks and reply. "I'll be watching." Hendricks would smirk. "You are fortunate we have agreed to this meeting, Vigilante...once you leave the premise you are no longer protected by this little arrangement."
The guards coated in armor assembled in groups of sixteen -- they really didn't want him involved or they didn't want to underestimate Mr. Freeze. The SWAT and prison security escorted Victor Fries into a large truck as military vehicles surrounded and isolated the block, they rode on to the Airport. The Dark Knight raced ahead of them, taking the bat mobile while pulling in favors to keep tabs on the convoy.
"Check point one is clear." spoke the words of a young man. A firm expression as the Dark Knight drove across town in the bat pod that gave off a soft squeal of a charged engine. In a a course of over twenty minutes the additional check points cleared.
"Check point two cleared."
"Check point three clear."
The convoy arrived and soldiers began moving the patient onto a JAL plane. 'Japan Airlines...Who are you working for Mr. Hendricks? Why do they want Mr. Freeze?' "Planning a trip without me?" purred the voice of a woman who approached him, her arms reaching for his waist as the Dark Knight lowered his hands to stop her from getting closer. "Selina..." he whispered before her lips pressed against his giving him no chance to speak as her lips ravaged his.
She broke the kiss and glimpsed at the scene. "What do we have here? Oh, Victor freed from the Icebox, hm? Where's he off to?"
Batman's lips remained sealed and firm in expression. "I don't know...I intend to find out. You can't come with me..."
"Oh? You're hardly the boss of me, Handsome. We may have this--..."
"Selina, no. You-..."
"--Don't know what I'm dealing with? Spare me the lecture you give to your kids. I've noticed they're Feds. Don't you think if there's anyone better to deal with them its me?"
"..." Batman's expression turned sour and brooding as he looked away from her, she smiled deviously before grabbing his cheek in order to control his movements. She licked his face and purred seductively. "Don't worry, I can handle--Ow!" Catwoman glared at him and then fell unconscious against his frame. "Batman to Black Canary...I need a pick up for the Batpod and Catwoman." He gently placed the woman onto the floor "On it Batman, be there in a moment."
The Dark Knight fell from the building, melting into the shadows of other vehicles as he moved closer towards the airplane fired up and preparing for take off.
'Sorry Selina...This kind of case I can't take you with me. Whoever is behind this has money, power, or both. The stakes are too high to risk anyone else getting involved.'
Chapter Two: Arctic Howler
The sidewalk was quiet as the couple walked down the street, her red black suit with a light red dress jacket with her hands folded across her chest. "Gee, it's like 20's degrees and you're not even wearing a coat, Smallville."
Clark Kent, mild manner reporter offered a bashful smirk lowering his head. "Well-uh...it's January and well, I tend to sweat...a lot." Lois stared off peaking through the windows of the stores. "Uh-huh...While I'm sure the idea of sweating is something you do in the shower room, the idea of you sweating is not something I particularly care to hear about."
"Yeah-well, I also forgot my coat...I left it at home on the hanger. And..." He noticed she was losing interest in the topic.
A yawn would escape her lips and a dismissive wave from her hand. "Well, thanks Smallville for being my Knight in shining armor by walking me to my car...Here's to tomorrow, hopefully something good comes along. Good night." Clark bobbed his head a couple of times as he stood outside her car with his hands folded in front of his belt bucket holding his brief case. "Good Night, Lois!" He rushed out and offered a little wave. Lois smiled at him before looking away from his awkward gaze he set upon her.
'She probably thinks of me as some freak.
'Two words to describe him...Socially awkward.'
'It's been quite some time since moving to Metropolis under my human name, Clark Kent. Being Clark Kent or Superman doesn't feel easy, but I hold out and hope that things will get better.'
Clark made his way across the parking lot to his car, he struggle for a moment to open the handle before pulling it open with a cranking pop from the door. 'It just gets so lonely, my friends at the planet are all I got on my days off...Maybe I should look into what people do for fun in this place. There is a disco not far...' Clark's attention turned to the radio announcement. "An airplane is reported to have lost control flying due west towards Japan..." the door shut as Clark Kent's clothes settled upon the back seat and a gust of wind swept through the parking lot.
The airplane engines screamed as its trajectory flew towards the ground on an angle, with a bubble of instruments pilots struggled to maintain altitude. "I'm going to attempt a crash landing..." "Estimated touch down in one minute..."
'An engine on the plane was damaged, from what I don't know. I can't move from my cabin, the pressure and gravity is locking me in place. People are more likely to be hit by a bus, struck by lightning, ran over by a train, die from sky diving, than experiencing a plane crash...I guess the odds are in my favor.'
'I get there in time, I calculate the scenario and how best to approach fixing it...I study its long wing span in a time frame students in high school wished they had for exams. My body rushes against the waves of air that have a different power, but similar to that of the ocean. Breaking through I arrive at the belly of the vehicle aligning its shape with my shoulders and spine, its faar too big and I probably look like an ant trying to stop the tide from coming in, but I'm not an ordinary ant.'
The large vessel stabilizes and rests upon the frame and strength of over 50,000 men. He feels his veins constricting and his mind applying his body mass and weight to the vessel to help it fly. His hands are careful not to damage the hull, applying too much pressure would cause the plating to turn into puddy within his fingers and eventually shred the plane due to the high speed. He balances the problem and waits for the plane to manage its stability before letting go slowly.
His earring twitches and his attention shifted to another engine that quickly fails, giving him enough time to realize he shouldn't let go. His attention is then drawn upon by F-18 fighter jets on either side of him, he realized the cargo within the large plane was important, he would remain with it balancing out.
Inside the Dark Knight would sneak to discover what was going on throughout the plane. He stopped upon the cargo rooms computer, flashing lights of red indicated there was too much being drained for Mr. Freeze's containment room. Batman began tapping away at the keyboard attempting to compensate and alternate power from sources on the plane.
'Who draws power from the engines to compensate for this kind of change?'
A gun would cock and two guards would aim their pistols at Batman. "What the hell are you doing? Step away from the computer now..." The Dark Knight would stare at the screen, studying it before backing away.
'I don't have time to explain.' A thunderous clap ignited from Batman's cape as his hand slipped pebbles of smoke towards the guards blinding them as he rolled towards the hatch, he pulled a lever that began to drop the cargo bay while his hands gripped his grappling hook gun. The smoke cleared, sucked out into the atmosphere giving the guards a clear line of sight for Batman. He fires the grappling hook and falls backwards out of the plane as the hook latches itself onto the cargo floor. A couple of gunshots would smash against the metal and suddenly loosen the claw causing Batman's line to give way. The caped crusader entered into a free fall, spreading his wings for a glide that would help snare his descent.
'My super hear listens as someone fell from the plane, behind me...I also heard Gunshots...I can't waste time.'
The Man of Steel dropped beneath the airplane and turned around to spot Batman gliding. His eyebrows furrowed and immediately wrapped his arms around Batman's waist to hold him in a hover.
'I would be lying if I said I wasn't surprised. My body suddenly grabbed in the middle of free fall and brought into a complete halt.'
"Let me guess...Not the fireworks you wanted so now you're going to catch the next show?"
"Hardly. I'm trying to save that plane from crashing."
"I think my way of doing it is better. And no one is getting hurt. I heard the gunshots."
"They were guards. I was trying to access the computer and stabilize the system."
"Is that so? Look --"
"I don't have time to deal with you." | "--I don't have time to deal with you." |
"Well unfortunately you're stuck with me. So, I either drop you off at the nearest police department or--..."
"--You could take me to the belly of the plane...there I can use my hacking equipment to fix the problem before anyone else gets hurt."
"I like my idea better."
"What's the risk to my idea? If the engines fail because of me, you can just fly them to their destination anyway. I don't want anyone to die just as much as you. That aircraft is carrying a wanted criminal from Gotham City, someone has sabotaged that plane and I can't find out who if it crashes. You need to trust me."
The airplane began to scream as the aircraft drifted towards the ground. "We're losing power to a third engine." "If that engine goes out we're going to rapidly descend. We won't be able to recover from..." Superman's shoulders rested against the belly of the plane, his left hand held onto Batman's utility belt from behind as the Dark Knight manipulated the cryptographic sequencer, a touch screen and view screen allowed him to navigate into the airplanes computer.
"I'm in." "How much power is left inside the plane?" "For the cabin, 90%...the engines and internal systems are down to 55%."
"Sounds like the engines are draining power from the internal system. They should be almost separate." "Right. Someone placed the chamber for freeze on the same power supply." "Maybe they thought it would self recharge and stabilize.""Or they were looking to start trouble." You like to assume the worst in people, don't you? " I'm stabilizing the power now. I cut off Freeze's cell. It's cold temperature should be enough for the rest of the trip. As the engines..."
"--Engines build up energy it will recharge the battery. I'm not stupid, you know."
Batman would smirk.
Japan...
Upon arriving in Japan Superman set down upon a rooftop and came to hover next to Batman. "Now, do you mind explaining all of this?" "The State Department has taken Mr. Freeze otherwise known as Dr. Victor Fries from a Arkham Asylum. Victor Fries is dangerous enough that Gotham's mayor and commissioner tried to negotiate for me to over see his transfer, in case someone tried to spring him out or even kill him."
'I've heard of Arkham Asylum, a lot of talk about it during my high school days. I recall reading a report that Gotham City was one of the highest crime infested cities in the world. ' "So, you're here to do exactly what the Government didn't want you to do. You have to stop now, you're going to hurt yourself."
'Does he think I'm new at this?' "Hardly. I know what I'm doing. These aren't toys in my utility belt."
"No. They are not. But I don't have to blink twice to take them away. All of them. So you tell me how you want to do this, the easy way or the other easy way."
"I have to gather more information."
"They have a legal right to do whatever they plan to do. I won't let you continue."
"I'm sure your boy scout rules help you sleep at night, but if you choose to continue with an idea that Government's are always out for the best interest of people, you're more naive than I thought. Puzzle it together yourself, taken from an Insane asylum to another country for purposes of research."
"People should have faith in their Government. It's a partnership of mutual agreement."
"And what happens when the Government has been compromise? Do you still trust them?"
"..." 'He's stubborn...'
'He's too hopeful.'
"I hope I'm not intruding...But I think this has gone on long enough." A feminine voice spoken in a cool tone of confidence and sharpness.

Gateway city...
(6 hours earlier)
A white van's black rubber tires screeched against the ground as the vehicle pulled out of the parking lot to Gateway City's first bank. The vehicle swerved through the first five city blocks dodging traffic in order to make a quick escape until reaching a freeway where it would smooth its pattern with the flow of traffic. Five men inside took off their black masks and panted.
"Alright, once we're at the safe house, take the plates and put them on the work shop. Denny and I will take the van to the junkyard and dispose of it."
"Holy shit!" The driver shouted while pressing the brakes. The tires would screech before a woman wearing a star spangled patterned bustier for armor stood with her hands placed onto her hips glaring at the van.
Long raven hair fell straight down her back with a polished gold circlet with a ruby star at the center of its design. Blue eyes glossed over the men in the van without masks as she smirked confidently at them. Giving a pause before making their decision their vehicle stormed forward attempting to barrel over the woman her hands reached forward before suddenly falling backwards and slipping underneath the car affording a rough bump for the vehicle.
'I know what people think about me. I'm just a princess looking for Mr. Right. That I'm too pragmatic. Overly critical of men and not women. Feminist or a Sexual fantasy to men and boys. Bitch or Princess to women and girls. To others I'm inferior in every way; how can anyone disagree?
How does a girl demonstrate she's NOT the typical Hollywood broad looking for a reality TV show?'
The van drove forward with ease after having run over Wonder Woman. The men inside pulled their masks onto their faces before raising their guns that were previously cocked and ready for combat.
'I think they've had enough fun.'
She smiled as her body lifted the vehicle off the ground and into the air her body sprawled out underneath the van with her hands and knees pushing the vehicle into the air as though the vehicle were driving above the freeway. Diverting the vehicles course towards the city police station she touched down and placed the van on its rear bummer up right and then dropped it into an empty parking space causing the men inside to muffle and moan as they were tossed about. Banging of the money plates inside were heard signaling for Wonder Woman to pull off the rear doors and grab the first two men and drop them onto the ground.
She climbed into the vehicle and grabbed the last three men to drag them out and place them onto the side walk with the other two for the police. She over saw the police taking the men into custody and then took to flight over the city.
'I'm not like anyone in the world. I was given a birthright, Daughter of a God and selected as a champion of them and often times they are my worst of enemies. I know what I do and try not to think about my personal life, I can't afford to endanger those I love or care about; Donna, Steve, Artemis...But sometimes having no social life gets so damn lonely. I feel...Cold.'
The amazon princess would descend from the bright sky touching down on tan cement balcony her form strode towards a set of double glass doors in order to step inside the apartment. The living room gifted with a medium sized flat screen television in front of a large blue couch and coffee table. A smile graced her features upon finding everything normal and enough for her to close the curtains behind her before walking into her bedroom to change outfit into a pair of blue jeans and a white blouse. She would settle down onto her bed with a sigh as her gaze fell upon a set of picture frames on her desk.
She lowered her head in defeat as clear droplets began to form within her eyes, quickly crushed by both pride and the lids that concealed her eyes. Blessed by Athena the Goddess of beauty, Diana found herself sulking in loneliness as the men in her romantic life came and went like the whispers of yesterday. The woman was free, but why did she feel so caged? Her strong lips pressed against each other as her jaw and chin sharpened as she contained her loneliness. A voice within her growled to get over her self, a shout of a soldier within but, her empathy and compassion would plea for release in this solemn moment, secluded from the world. In her room she was a small safe haven, confined in comparison to that shoreline on Paradise Island, where she used to get away from the amazon city to be free and collect her thoughts.
She didn't wear a mask like the other heroes, she brought her face and heroism to the call but, behind these closed doors she was a woman with needs and no matter how much she would try to deny or hide them, she would falter at times like this. It was then her attention turned towards the door to her room as the sound of her apartments door opening signaled that Etta was home. Diana rubbed her eyes to push away any tears and she stood up making her way towards a couple of magazines. She pulled her up up and strolled into the living room holding the magazines. "Hey, you're back." Diana offered a smile along with the well spoken words. Etta returned the gestured smile while carrying groceries. "Yes. I got us some snacks and some of that pasta you like from that deli. By the way, you know Tim?"
Diana paused to think about the name. "No..." "He's the guy who was checking out your butt." Diana's eyes widened some and then she shook her head glancing down at the magazine she was reminded of why she started into the room. Her gaze went back to Etta while Etta began packing the refrigerator with fruit. "Well...I told him that you would be interested in seeing him, maybe later tonight." Diana furrowed her brows and growled. "What? Why would you do that?" Etta shrugged. "I dunno how you meet men on Paradise, but here its called "networking" and your network is working angles to get you out of the house more often. Sitting around here admiring magazines and fantasizing about men or "co-workers" isn't going to get you a boyfriend."
Diana shook her head and applied a palm to her face. "Etta, while I appreciate your concern and I don't know how I should feel about your eavesdropping. But I do not fantasize about my "co-workers" and I'm not looking for a boyfriend." Etta closed the refrigerator and tapped her hands on the counter. "Is that why you still have that 1 year old magazine of what's his name?" Diana's gaze fell to the picture of Bruce Wayne on the cover of GQ, causing Diana to feel a surge of red. "I..." Etta's eyes furrowed. "Oh! A new one, who's that?" The young woman reached and snatched the magazine cover of Bruce. "He's cute. Too rich for you though and he probably goes through a girlfriend every week. Last thing we need is for Wonder Woman to be yesterday's news with a trashy playboy." Diana's attention was divided listening to Etta as her eyes fell upon a Daily Planet picture of Superman with a titled cover page by Lois Lane 'Exclusive: first time ever - interview with Superman!'
Etta smirked at Diana and placed her hand onto Diana's shoulder. "You shouldn't be afraid to admit how you feel, just ask him out. He's up your alley anyway, girl." Diana shook her head. "N-no..." Diana hesitated, her insecurity rising within her again and then her confidence came in. "Listen. I know you're trying to help. Thank you. I just need to get out more, that's all. Perhaps we could spend some time together." Etta frowned. "Sorry, Di...I have a date tonight. I'd offer a double date but, that might not be good." Diana smiled genuinely at Etta. "That's...Good. I'm glad you're getting out and meeting new people. Who is your date?" Diana smirked leaning closer to Etta as her room mate handed back the magazine. "Steve Trevor." Diana's eyes widened in shock "Oh...Uh." Etta frowned and placed her hands onto Diana's bracers. "Please don't be upset. I'm sorry. It was a surprise for me too. He just asked me a few hours ago!"
Diana placed her hands onto Etta's and forced a smile. "I'm glad you are happy, Etta. I hope things work out." Etta wrapped her arms around Diana exchanging a hug between each other. "Thank you, Di. It probably won't go well. He can be such a jackass." Diana's smile became genuine followed by a soft laugh.
'It's not like I'm lonely. I am strong. I am blessed. I am grateful for life. I stand for justice. I have friends. I just need to warm up...Shake off the cold.'
