Batman needed an extra person to watch his back and so Dick Grayson was trained under his Nickname given to him by his mother "Robin."
As Dick grew older and became more experienced he began making decisions for himself, some of which held questionable judgment in Bruce Wayne's eyes. An argument between Bruce and Dick occurred resulting in Dick choosing to quit his role as Robin and take up the alias Nightwing after being inspired by a Kryptonian Warrior named Nightwing that was told to Dick by Superman. In Bludhaven Nightwing would prove to be a powerful hero much like Batman was to Gotham. He has fought very deadly criminals as well teamed up with heroes such as Huntress, Supergirl, Superman, and even Batman.
In Recent history Dick has returned to Gotham in the absence of Bruce Wayne, Dick Grayson moved Nightwing to Gotham to clean up the streets until Batman returns from where ever he had disappeared to.
